Genre: persuasive essay
Purpose: To explain the controversy of veils worn by women in the middle east
Central Message: We need to encourage the separation of traditional Muslim family practices from the political ideology of Islamic fundamentalism.
World View and Assumptions: Family and traditions are important. Women have cretin expectations that they have to live up to.
Use of Tools and Evidence: Gave a background of the history of the culture of the veil. He showed the controversy and explained why some have different views and opinions. Showed arguments for both sides.
Well that’s about what I got out of this reading too. I thought it was interesting that the author was able to not only explain why the veils were there in the first place but also put a little positive spin on them. Towards the end I found I was agreeing more with the voluntary veil wearing Muslims and looking at the western society feminists with more than a little disdain. As you said he showed both sides, and that really did up his credibility and I personally found that I was able to listen a little more intently to his own argument.
ReplyDeleteClear and concise! Love it! I thought this essay was super eye-opening. When I read the the title, I thought I knew exactly what it was going to be about and how I was going to feel after reading it, but I was definitely wrong about that. I think it is a good idea to learn about other cultures and traditions. I sometimes find myself thinking like I live in a box and that is definitely not good. I think a lot of American people think in a box too. I know that I never considered wearing a veil to be something positive. I am glad that I know this now.
